IEC 61508
Generic functional-safety standard for E/E/PE systems (electrical, electronic, programmable-electronic). Defines Safety Integrity Levels (SIL 1 through SIL 4). Parent of the domain-specific safety standards including ISO 26262 (automotive) and IEC 62061 (machinery).
Why It Matters
Knowing IEC 61508 is foundational for any robotics safety engineer because the domain-specific standards (26262, 13849, 61511) are all derived from it. Most platform-level safety arguments reference 61508 at the bottom of the stack.
